Columba Racing

We are a Slovak team of 6 students actively taking part in the Land Rover 4x4 in Schools competition.
All of us are students of Gymnázium, Poštová 9, Košice (gympos.sk) and also members of the Team Talentum (team.talentum.net).

Our Work

Find out more about us and the work we do.

Our team

Even though the Columba Racing team was founded in 2016 the roots of our team are much deeper. We have been competing under the name of Team Talentum since 2011 in various international competitions such as RoboCup, First Lego League and many more. As the core members of Team Talentum started going to a new high school some new very talented students joined the ship and Columba Racing Team was created under the guidance of our teacher Mrs. Monika Molokáčová.
Due to the fact that our team started late, we decided to choose a slightly different attitude to our tasks and problems. We have only a small span of time for preparations, hence our strategy consists of focusing on specific fields more than on the others, which we decided not to resolve completely. First we pored through the rules and regulations to find out what are the most important fields of the competition. When we built up our team, chose our name and decided for functions of each team member, our primary objective was to distribute tasks across all of us, determine plan and define schedule for the future. During our meetings we discuss our progress, future plans and other issues. We always try to identify difficult and time demanding areas of our work in advance, such as the vehicle construction, portfolio, marketing and overall competition strategy. We also seek for sponsors, technical specialists and consultants in order to obtain know-how and to make our work even more professional.
As individuals we all have very similar plans for the future. We are determined to finish high school and carry on with our studies as university students. We are hoping to get into very high ranked universities as Oxford, Cambridge or Imperial College of London. As a team we would like to continue our work even after finishing high school. Either with a local university team or somehow stay connected and compete together. Hopefully we will end up in the same university and we will try to dominate the university robotics scene as Columba Racing team.

The competition

Landrover 4x4 is a robotics and engineering competition where teams of 4-6 high school students are required to build an RC car and complete an obstacle course. The car has to include a 4-wheel drive system, a tilt sensor and a light sensor, so both the robotics and engineering skills are equally tested. Besides the performance of your car, its mechanical design is also important and carefully assessed by the judges. Just like in real life, the presentation of your product also plays a huge role in this competition.
When planning our car's visage, our biggest concern was to achieve the best grade of realism within our capabilities. For this reason our design is greatly influenced by the current trends in offroad vehicles, particularly those created under the supervision of experts from Land Rover. We also strive for precision with our models, which has helped us get used to modern and professional techniques of designing and manufacturing, such as digital modeling and 3D printing. This allowed us to concentrate more on reproducibility and ease of modification.
The ideology behind our work is to let everyone excel in fields that interests them the most and do a lot of team building. We look at mistakes as opportunities to learn and to grasp some new information. We try to set collective goals using online productivity tools to connect and achieve them. Other crucial aspect in our work is to have deadlines and finish things in time. We believe this is the key to effective and professional work.

Team Leader - Teacher
Mrs. Monika Molokáčová

Monika Molokáčová

Mrs. Molokáčová has been a maths and informatics teacher in our school since 2002 and our maths teacher throughout our time at Gymnázium Poštová 9. She has great passion for sience and deep understanding of education. Thanks to these qualities we are very glad to call her our team advisor.

Team manager
Juraj Mičko

Juraj Mičko

Juro is a very important asset to our team. He has always liked maths and this later incited his passion for programming and electrical engineering. Even though he is the shortest in our team he earned our respect and thus became the team manager. Perhaps the most interesting thing about Juro has to be that his favourite ice-cream flavour is punch.

Manufacturing director
Jakub Mach

Jakub Mach

Based on Kubo's marvelous problem solving and critical thinking skills it was a no-brainer to have him in our circles as a manufacturing director. He sometimes seems like he is a very quiet guy but nobody is advised to get into an intellectual argument with him. This point is also proven by the fact that his favourite pizza is pepperoni with a bit of spicy sauce.

Design Manager
Pavol Drotár

Pavol Drotár

Pali brings a snippet of glamour and charisma to our team. Although he is great at sciences, he is also awesome at designing everything from logos to cars so he got the role of a design manager. His ties are certainly fit for this role since he loves to rock James Bond's four-in-hand knot. Now that's style!

Manufacturing manager
Michal Pándy

Michal Pándy

The first member of our dynamic duo is Mišo. He has many experiences when it comes to building robots, designing solutions and he also excels at public speaking and sciences. It was no question that he should take the place of a manufacturing manager with Zoli. His quality is projected to his baking skills as well. Try to taste his special vintage tiramisu and you will forget about your life problems.

Manufacturing Manager
Zoltán Hanesz

Zoltán Hanesz

The second member of the dynamic duo is Zoli. He got into robotics in his early years at elementary school so he has always been a critical member of our team. Together with Mišo he completes the dynamic duo as a manufacturing manager. His ability to bring clear and tasteful decisions have saved us a lot of times. One of the examples of this skill is the fact that he always orders the best foods at foreign restaurants. While others struggle with pork brains he enjoys his medium-rare sirloin.

Resource Manager
Ádám Urbán

Ádám Urbán

Perchance Ádám is the best person to go to when it comes to various materials because he has a distinctive understanding of their use in the industry. He is not an exception when it comes to our team's science side and he also has an extraordinary feel for finance opportunities. These remarkable qualities made him our resource manager. Fueled by his beloved kopi luwak coffee he is always ready to bring his best.
